Our logo design process.
It’s a combination of your knowledge of your business, and our skills of converting this into a graphic representation.

1. A solid design brief.

I like for my clients to take the time to run through a quick logo design brief form. It gives us a good grounding from which to start. I can generate any further questions I might have over and above this and make sure we start in the right direction. This will save us all time, effort and heartache in the long run and ensure we get the best result for your company or business logo.

2. Research and brainstorming

After reviewing and clarifying the brief. It is time to assess the overall positioning of the clients business within its market. Basically – Check out what is happening with the competition, the particular market and trends within it, the points of difference the business has over competition and where the client wants to situate itself both now and moving into the future. The logo will become a central part of the clients brand, so its crucial we get this all right from the start.

3. Initial concept sketching.

Let the fun begin. Sketching is still the fastest way to get good ideas out quickly. Ideas can flow freely and evolve at a rate which is not possible when doing these things on the computer. This stage of the process is still very critical in my book and helps me refine and clarify which ideas I will take through to the computer stage to do up and present for the client. I rarely present the sketches to the client as often they are only a representation of my ideas and require a fair bit of imagination.

4. Refined Concepts

The next stage requires sitting down at the computer and working up more mature concepts. This is generally done using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I try to keep where possible the logo designs in a vector based format, depending on the required future usage of the logo. Generally speaking I work up 3 design concepts for the client. Sometimes a variation or two on these as well.

5. Client presentation.

I like to prepare my concepts in pdf form. These can either be emailed or presented in person. The client can review and then prepare feedback for me and general thoughts on them. We can discuss these concepts and work out what is required from here.

6. Developments and Signoff.

Where required, I can work in any developments as discussed with the client. Now is often a good time to assess colourways and options for fine tuning the logo. These are then re-presented to the client for signoff. We can go back and forth here as much as is required, but don’t find we need to do this too often to achieve the final result.

7. File creation and supply.

AS mentioned above, I create my logos in vector format, so that files can be scaled and used in many situations. Files are supplied in multiple formats appropriate for all standard required formats. In conjunction with these I also create and supply a logo specification sheet, which specifies colours in Spot Colour, Process Colour, RGB, HTML and also any fonts used if appropriate. This becomes a reference tool for anybody using the logo in future and ensure consistency in its use.

8. Applications of the logo.

From here the next logical progression is to apply the logo across different marketing pieces for your business. This doesn’t fall in as part of our logo design process, but more often than not is something we undertake. These can include business cards, corporate stationery, websites, vehicle signage, advertising… and the list goes on.

I am always on hand for existing clients to help manage their logo and marketing materials. If any third parties dealing with any of the logo files I have created need advice or alternative files, I am always happy to help. I keep a copy of all client files on my archive as a backup and am happy to supply where required.

"Once we saw the work Karl had done previously, it was a no brainer who we would use. Now we absolutely love our new logo!"
